How to Make Your Candle Last Longer: Wick Trimming, Burn Times & Care Tips

There's nothing better than lighting your favorite Maddox Candles fragrance and watching your space fill with beautiful fragrance. But proper candle care can make a big difference in how your candle burns, how evenly the wax melts, and how much enjoyment you get from every candle.

A few simple habits can help you get the most out of your candle while keeping the flame clean and controlled. Whether you're enjoying a fresh scent like Eucalyptus or Rain, a warm fragrance like Vanilla or Sand, or a deeper scent like Cedar or Teakwood, taking care of your candle helps create a better experience from the first burn to the last.

Here's the simple candle-care routine we recommend for getting the most from your Maddox Candles candle.

1. Always Trim Your Wick Before Burning

One of the easiest—and most important—candle-care habits is trimming your wick.

Before each burn, trim the wick to approximately 1/4 inch. A properly trimmed wick helps maintain a more controlled flame and can reduce excess soot and smoke.

A wick that's too long can create a larger, less controlled flame, which may cause your candle to burn faster than necessary.

You don't need to trim the wick excessively. The goal is simply to remove the excess charred portion and keep the wick at the recommended length.

Quick rule: Trim your wick to about 1/4 inch before each burn.

A dedicated wick trimmer makes this especially easy because it allows you to reach the wick without getting wax or soot on your fingers.

2. Give Your First Burn Enough Time

The first burn is one of the most important burns your candle will have.

When you light your candle for the first time, allow the melted wax to reach toward the edges of the container. This helps establish an even melt pattern.

If you extinguish your candle too quickly during the first burn, the wax can begin creating a tunnel around the wick. Over time, that can leave unused wax around the sides of your candle.

For this reason, try not to light your candle for only a few minutes and then extinguish it. Give the candle enough time to develop an even melt pool.

3. Avoid Burning Your Candle for Too Long

While you want to give your candle enough time to create an even melt pool, longer isn't always better.

Avoid letting your candle burn for excessive periods of time. Extended burns can cause the container and wax to become very hot and can cause the flame to become less controlled as the wick grows longer.

A good practice is to follow the care instructions provided with your candle and allow it to cool completely before lighting it again.

If you want fragrance throughout the day, consider enjoying your candle in shorter, intentional sessions rather than leaving it burning continuously.

4. How to Prevent Candle Tunneling

Candle tunneling occurs when the wax directly around the wick melts while wax around the outer edges remains solid.

It can make your candle look uneven and leave a significant amount of wax unused.

The best way to help prevent tunneling is to make sure your candle gets an adequate melt pool during its early burns. Avoid repeatedly burning your candle for very short periods of time.

Think of it as giving your candle time to establish its burn pattern.

Once you've created a good, even melt pool, continue following proper wick-trimming and burn-time habits throughout the life of the candle.

5. Keep the Wax Pool Clean

Over time, small pieces of wick, matches, dust, or other debris can make their way into the wax.

Before lighting your candle, check the surface and remove any debris you see.

Keeping the wax clean helps maintain a cleaner-looking candle and prevents unwanted materials from being heated in the melt pool.

It's a small step, but it can make your candle look better and keep your candle-care routine simple.

6. Extinguish Your Candle Properly

When you're finished enjoying your candle, extinguish the flame safely.

Avoid blowing directly into the candle whenever possible, as this can send melted wax or smoke into the surrounding area.

A candle snuffer can be a convenient accessory for extinguishing the flame, while a wick dipper can also be used to safely extinguish a candle by briefly dipping the wick into the melted wax and then returning it upright.

Whatever method you use, allow the candle to cool completely before moving it.

And remember: Never leave a burning candle unattended.

7. Let Your Candle Cool Before Lighting It Again

After extinguishing your candle, give it plenty of time to cool before moving it, touching the container, or lighting it again.

The container and melted wax can remain hot even after the flame has been extinguished.

Allowing your candle to cool completely also gives you a chance to check the wick and prepare it for the next burn.

Before your next use, simply trim the wick back to approximately 1/4 inch and you're ready to go.

8. Store Your Candles Properly

If you have several Maddox Candles scents in your collection, proper storage can help keep them looking and smelling their best between uses.

Store candles in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and excessive heat. Keeping them covered or protected from dust can also help preserve their appearance.

This is especially useful if you like rotating your fragrances throughout the year.

You might reach for Island Life or Ocean Breeze during warmer months, Rain or Eucalyptus when you want something fresh and clean, or richer fragrances such as Campfire, Cedar, and Sandalwood when you're creating a cozy atmosphere.

Having several fragrances on hand makes it easy to match your candle to your mood.

9. Don't Burn Your Candle All the Way Down

It's important to know when it's time to retire your candle.

Avoid burning a candle when there is only a very small amount of wax remaining at the bottom of the container. Continuing to burn it beyond the recommended point can cause the container to become excessively hot.

Instead, follow the product's care instructions and discontinue use when the remaining wax reaches the recommended level.

While it can be tempting to get every last bit of fragrance from your candle, safety should always come first.

10. Make Candle Care Part of the Experience

Candle care doesn't have to feel like a chore.

Think of it as part of enjoying your candle.

Trim the wick. Light your candle. Let the fragrance fill your space. Enjoy the atmosphere.

Then extinguish the flame and let your candle cool before putting it away.

Whether you're relaxing with Lavender, creating a cozy atmosphere with Vanilla, freshening your space with Eucalyptus, or enjoying the warm character of Cedar or Sandalwood, proper care helps you get the most from every Maddox Candles burn.
