Sandalwood: The Most Requested Scent in Home Fragrance
If you asked a hundred people to name a candle scent that sounds expensive, a large share would say sandalwood. It has that reputation for a reason — and unlike a lot of reputations in fragrance, this one is earned.
What sandalwood smells like
Sandalwood is the heartwood of a slow-growing tree, and it's one of the few woods whose scent is genuinely soft.
Top: a gentle warmth, almost milky, with no sharp edge at all
Heart: the wood itself — creamy, smooth, faintly sweet
Base: a rich, lingering woodiness that holds in a room for hours
What separates it from every other wood we pour is texture. Cedar is dry. Fresh Cut Wood is green and sharp. Teakwood is polished and a little leathery. Sandalwood is creamy — it has a roundness that reads almost like a soft skin scent rather than a timber.
That's why it's the wood that works in a bedroom.
Why it's such a consistent favorite
It's warm without being sweet. This is the hardest balance in fragrance and sandalwood does it naturally. There's no sugar in it, yet it comforts like a sweet scent does. For anyone who wants cozy but finds vanilla too much, this is the answer.
It's calming in a grounded way. Sandalwood has been burned in meditation and devotional practice for thousands of years across South and East Asia. Customers reach for it in the same spirit — it's a settling scent rather than a sleepy one.
Everybody recognizes it. Sandalwood appears in an enormous share of fine fragrance, soap and skincare. People smell it and feel like they already know it, which makes it an unusually low-risk purchase.
It's genuinely unisex. Soft enough for people who dislike heavy woods, substantial enough for people who dislike anything floral.
Where to burn it
Bedroom. Its best room. Warm, soft, calming, and without the stimulating complexity of Teakwood or Coffee & Whiskey.
Meditation or yoga space. The traditional use and still the best one. Grounding without demanding attention.
Living room, evening. Especially in the hour after everyone's gone quiet.
Bathroom, for a long bath. One of the few warm scents that works in a bathroom — it reads as a spa rather than a bakery.
Pairings
+ Vanilla — the softest, most comforting pair we make
+ Frankincense & Myrrh — deep, ceremonial, extraordinary in winter
+ Cedar — dries it out and makes it more everyday
+ Rose — classic and romantic, the way sandalwood appears in most perfume
Why soy wax matters
Sandalwood's whole character is its creaminess, and that comes from heavier molecules that need gentle, sustained heat to release properly. Burn it too hot and the softness burns off — you get a flat, slightly harsh wood note and lose the very thing you bought it for.
Soy's lower melt temperature is what keeps it round. It's also why sandalwood is one of the scents where a well-made soy candle is most obviously better than a cheap one: there's nowhere for a bad burn to hide.
Care
Full melt pool on the first burn — two to three hours
Trim the wick to ¼ inch before every burn
Four hours maximum per session
Lid on between burns
Retire at half an inch of remaining wax
