Why soy wax matters for citrus

This is the case where wax choice matters most, and it's the opposite of what you'd expect.

Citrus and green notes are the lightest molecules in perfumery. They're the first to evaporate — which is why so many lemon candles smell wonderful cold and disappointing lit. Overheat them and the top note is gone in fifteen minutes, leaving a vague sweetness behind.

Soy's lower melt temperature is why our Lemongrass still smells like lemongrass in hour three. It's also why we recommend the lid: an open citrus candle loses its top notes to the air even when it isn't burning.

• First burn: two to three hours to a full melt pool

• Trim to ¼ inch before every burn

• Four hours maximum per session

• Store away from direct sunlight, which degrades citrus oils
