The Best Candle Scent for Every Room in Your House
Most people buy one candle they like and move it around. It works fine, but it's leaving a lot on the table — because rooms have different jobs, and scent is one of the fastest ways to help a room do its job.
Here's how we'd scent a whole house.
Entryway — set the tone
Burn: Cedar or Fresh Cut Wood Why: the entry is the first impression of the whole house, for guests and for you coming home. Woody scents read as clean, cared-for and considered. They also don't compete with whatever's happening in the kitchen. Size: 8oz Classic is enough — entryways are usually small and you want a signal, not a statement.
Kitchen — control the odors
Burn: Lemongrass Why: citrus and green notes cut cooking smells better than anything else. Fish, garlic, fried food, last night's dinner — a fresh scent doesn't mask them, it genuinely reads as clearing them. This is the number one reason our customers keep Lemongrass on permanent rotation. Avoid: anything sweet or gourmand while you're actually cooking. Food scent plus food scent is confusing and unappetizing. Size: 8oz Classic, on a shelf away from the hob.
Living room — the everyday
Burn: Cedar for daily use, Teakwood or Campfire for evenings and guests Why: this is the room you spend the most hours in, so the priority is a scent that doesn't fatigue you. Dry woody scents are the least tiring family — your nose stays interested in them for months, where a sweet gourmand wears out in a week. Size: 10oz Signature minimum. If your living room is open-plan or has high ceilings, the 24oz Prestige is the only size that will genuinely fill it. Undersizing here is the most common mistake we see.
Bedroom — wind down, don't stimulate
Burn: Aloe, Bamboo, or Lavender Why: the bedroom's job is to help you stop. Soft, cool, clean scents support that; bold, warm and complex ones keep your attention engaged. Coffee & Whiskey is a wonderful candle and a terrible bedroom candle. Size: 8oz Classic. In a bedroom you want atmosphere, not throw. Safety: never leave a candle burning as you fall asleep. Light it an hour before bed, extinguish it when you get in.
Bathroom — clean, not chemical
Burn: Bamboo or Ocean Breeze Why: you want fresh, and you want it to not smell like air freshener. Cool green and marine notes hit that mark. Bamboo in particular is why so many hotel bathrooms feel better than yours. Size: 8oz Classic. Small room, light scent, no exceptions.
Home office — match the work
Burn: Lemongrass or Ocean Breeze for energy and focus; Cedar or Patchouli for grounding and deep work Why: bright citrus is widely associated with alertness. Earthy and woody scents feel more like settling in. Pick by the kind of work, not the room. Bonus: lighting the same candle every time you start work builds a genuine cue. After a couple of weeks, the scent itself starts to signal "focus."
Dining room — don't compete with the food
Burn: Teakwood or Cedar, lit before guests arrive and extinguished when food is served Why: warm woody scents make a room feel welcoming without interfering with what's on the plate. Strong citrus, florals and gourmands all fight with a meal. Etiquette note: unscented candles on the actual table, scented candles across the room. Always.
Reading nook or study — the good chair
Burn: Patchouli, Teakwood, or Frankincense & Myrrh Why: deep, grounding scents are what make a small corner feel like a destination. This is the one place we'd actively encourage a bold, unusual scent.
Guest room — neutral but memorable
Burn: Bamboo or Cedar Why: you're picking for a stranger's taste, so you want something almost universally liked. Nobody has a bad memory attached to cedar or a bamboo-green accord. Detail: leave the candle and a box of matches out with a note. It costs nothing and guests remember it.
Basements and interior rooms — fix the staleness
Burn: Ocean Breeze Why: this is its secret best use. Cool marine and ozonic notes make a windowless room feel ventilated in a way no other family manages. Better than any "fresh linen" candle we've tried.
Small apartments — one rule
Fresh scents make small spaces feel larger; heavy sweet scents make them feel smaller and closer. If your whole home is one room, build around Bamboo, Aloe and Lemongrass, and keep one woody candle — Cedar — for evenings.
Scenting a whole house without chaos
Two principles:
1. Keep neighboring rooms in related families. Kitchen Lemongrass next to living-room Bamboo works. Kitchen Lemongrass next to living-room Coffee & Whiskey is a collision at the doorway.
2. Only burn one bold scent at a time. Campfire, Coffee & Whiskey and Frankincense & Myrrh are lead singers. Everything else can be the band.
The four-candle house
If you want the whole place handled with the fewest jars:
Lemongrass 8oz — kitchen and bathroom
Cedar 10oz — entry and everyday living room
Aloe 8oz — bedroom
Campfire or Teakwood 24oz — evenings, guests, occasions
